Slice Exhibition, Pence Gallery
You’re invited!
July 12-Aug 16, 2024
Reception on Friday, July 12, 6-9 PM
This is so much fun! This piece, Elongated Idea Capsule, has been selected to be included in the Slice exhibition at Pence Gallery.
Update: It was awarded an honorable mention! What a fun surprise!
The show is curated by Robert (Bob) Orbital, an artist whose work I’ve always really liked.
This is an open-theme exhibition, displaying art that is conceptually thoughtful, technically skilled, and representative of contemporary trends in art.
This piece is part of the Time Capsules series and is made from the pages of a Crocker Art Museum member’ “Art Letter”. The sculpture’s dimensions are 4.5’ x 3" x 3". The paper basket shape is closed at the bottom, and open at the top.
Something that I like about it is that it acts as a tick mark, like what you would see on a timeline, as things move forward.
I also love how it looks and acts when you look inside of it. To see what I mean, take a look at this 30 second video. For me it’s reminiscent of a digestive system.
Each piece in the Time Capsules series is a representation of the potentially parasitic ideas that exist in a moment of time. The work has allowed me to practice making clear decisions about what to do next. I get to own the creation process more fully than ever.
This idea reflects how I approach being more decisive in life and is emblematic of taking on a new way of seeing, acting and making.
This body of work inspires others to be more in charge of their life’s path by making decisions based on their own desires and what’s true for them. Even if they feel unsure of the outcome.
You’re invited to stop in to see all the work in the show. It’s a gem of a group of show that includes artists from California.
It’ll only be up for little while so add it to your calendar!

Here’s a little more about the curator, Robert Orbital…
As a professor of sculpture at California State University, Sacramento. His work has been showcased in exhibitions and installations in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York, as well as in Japan. His sculptural installations, based on the transformation of common domestic and industrial materials, appear to stretch our biological universe into different dimensions. Ortbal has also designed social practice works that question ideas of economic trade and civic space. He holds a B.A. in ceramics from San Francisco State University and an M.F.A. in ceramic sculpture from the University of California, Davis.
This will be a neat show that I hope you can see!
